The 1377 frequency rates 1.8%. In 6 weeks or so when MTR have their first full survey I guarantee you the rating will no more than 2%.

It irked me when Magic changed frequency (no I can’t get it at all nowadays, drat it) – it was a great pity to lose the station. I thought, well, at least there was still 3MP. Now with 3MP gone as well, as far as good music is concerned, frankly I feel somewhat betrayed. Clearly listeners of my generation (and taste in music) are irrelevant. I suppose I shouldn’t be all that surprised.

I have noticed things have gone quiet, publicity-wise. I suppose they are waiting for the results of the survey – ready to praise them to the rafters or stick the knife in….depending on the results. I know what result I’m hoping for!

I tried searching on Google re MTR’s coverage but I don’t think I had the right key words. As I said, I’m new to all this. It’s probably the first time I’ve ever cared enough about listening to the radio to put my thoughts to print.

Surely CRA would want some security of tenure for a licence in a high profile location such as Canberra? If there was a problem with the problem-ridden ACMA that prevented or delayed the issuing of an experimental or whatever applicable licence, wouldn’t Teacher Joan and her CRA members look a little foolish to the eyes of the watching pollies in our seat of electoral power?

Perhaps ACMA are slow in updating, but it’s not a good look.

There’s a drunk in Malvern who’s found the station too and keeps phoning in.

Roll on for the TX upgrade, more will tune in and proportionately, more callers thus giving depth of choice of who to put to air.

The 3mp digital channel has no announcers. It’s just a computer. What few announcers remained have gone on to better things. It was mostly pre recorded anyway.

Have you noticed after the first weeks blaze of publicity…Herald Sun etc MTR seem to have dropped off the radar.

My comment about Tullamarine still applies I think. Under the licence agreement I’d imagine it’s unlikely to be heard on that side of the city. Maybe they want to suggest Greater Melbourne is listening to their station?

Marconi (great name BTW), do you know what area 3MP/MTR’s licence actually covers? How far north of the peninsula into Melbourne would be interesting to know. If it is only a narrow area I don’t see how they could get the listening numbers to put a dent into rival talk back stations.

Could be worse, you could be sacked in the world’s most distant capital city with zero in the piggy bank and then needing to get back east, like what befall a couple of former employees of Matthew’s current PD due to his boss.

News on time at work is not an issue, which is why I don’t mind listening to Gold. It’s only at home, before I go to work that I like to ensure I’m on schedule. My old clock radio is pretty basic, and as per the comments about directional signals, MTR still comes through loud and clear so it was easier to go back to it for just the news and weather. It’s the only time I listen to the radio at home – which is also why I haven’t dashed out and bought a digital (clock) radio. That and the cost of course…

MTR in their weather reports always mentions the temperature at Tullamarine – I wonder if they can even get MTR at Tulla?

1377 is a clear channel in Australia, 1368 in Goulburn to the North East; on much the same bearing, 1386 is reserved for Sydney (or thereabouts) but isn’t on air (and likely will never be).

5AA used to be on 1386, limiting 3MP in areas to the north west of the TX, which is the CBD and all suburbs in the northern and western quadrant beyond the CBD, so is there now room for a reshuffle of the sticks?

And TD Frankston what are you talking about? Plenty of choice for on time news. 3AW and Magic for example are spot on for News times. The News reader must start at 6 seconds past the hour and half hour to accomadate both staions in tandum ..and relay stations. Magic use time pips. 774 are on time too as you would expect from ABC. If you listen to GOLD 104 or any other FM staion expect to get late news!

Jason, please reduce your rantings, you make next to no sense and your posts are illiterate. Don’t you think MRN know the 3MP signal isn’t the best? It’s called due dilligence. I’m sure they’re aware of it and will likely not spend $77.5 million to fix it.

Marconi, you might be right, at least they can complain about the signal strength if surveys don’t go well.

How many of hundreds of thousands or millions could be spent on transmitter upgrades or relocation for a transmission that is not robust in these days of increased RFI in our homes, businesses and cars.

Simply more mentions per hour for digital (free) and import a container loads of base model digital radios and an easy to use car add-on (ie. not the Pure Highway or as I say, the Impure Goat Track) and make sure the MTR intended audience gets these devices in their hands.

Singo can be smart bloke when he puts his mind to it, so he’ll know the best way to get MTR listeners onto digital.

Caller to Luke Grant’s show last night from Essendon said he had unpacked his new digital radio as that was the only way he could listen to MTR, this is 30-35 km only away from the 3MP mast and there’s no AM reception? Crazy! Digital is only way to go.

Of all the radio stations to be vandalised, 4BU/Hitz is such a tireless supporter of the community in the manner which all stations used to be about up until 15 years ago.

Great that they were back on air so quickly, testament to actually employing a tech (it may surprise your more closeted metro readers, many regional stations employ no engineers) and getting back on air, even if it was in the wee hours of the morning.

Will be interesting what the investigation by the Fire Brigade and Police can come up with, hope it leads to them catching the culprit.

4BU/Hitz were looking for a new GM recently, hopefully routine procedures such as storing the rubbish bins have not been lax of late.

Bundaberg is a wonderful little city with great location, much development and gentrification, friendly and hard working people, sad there’s an undesirable element, however small that wrecks the good reputation. It needs to be weeded out.

I read with amusement the 3MP ‘fanpage’ on Facebook, all these supposed devotees lamenting the demise of their station, nothing to listen to in the mornings, blah blah, but no mention that 3MP was on digital radio. If these ‘devotees’ were so devoted, they would’ve bought a digital radio from when the signal switched on to enjoy 3MP and all their beloved music in a high level of quality like never before. But they didn’t and now whinge when there’s a change on analogue.

With the rise of digital receivers in coming years, expect to see ‘My MP’ once again increase in profile.

I read in a forum about digital radio that Sam’s Warehouse are selling digital radios for around $60.

Another element would be to hold listener awareness promotions and be handing out digital radios. Cheap digital radios, which are likely to have the same receiving chip as a more expensive model should be handed out to as many as the budget can afford. A bulk purchase can’t cost that much.

By getting people talking about digital radio and showing them off to other people, it would create effective word of mouth and hopefully a few diary tickers would snag one to MTR’s benefit.

Please try and fix up spelling and grammar, it’s as bad as your on-air delivery during calls into the station.

Wrong again, you were wrong about MTR not being on digital and now this. The names you mentioned were on the latest attempt at talk from 2001.

Either MTR is very short of callers or the producer had poor judgment, should’ve found a stronger talent to kick off callers on a fresh topic as it then was.

The GBP isn’t what it used to be (almost 3 for 1 when DMG entered Australia), the world economy isn’t what it used to be and DMGRA’s UK parent owners, a listed company are facing pressure from investors. Couldn’t get much worse for them.

As far as the old 3AK is concerned, after the Sydney experiment – featuring Kennett, Hinch, Jost etc, as you mentioned – the station changed hands and was bought by a chap named Peter Corso, who tried to run it as a joint Italian/English operation.

It was during this period that the station moved from its location in the Richmond studios of GTV-9, and was established in Peel Street, West Melbourne, opposite the Victoria Market. At that stage, it was still on 1503KHz.

It moved to 1116KHz and changed call sign to SEN shortly after that.

I was surprised after many many years as a listener to 1377Am suddenly I found out the the normal program been changed.

Dear manager please inform me in what wave length previous 1377 AM is broadcasting now.

I am wondering if can not use other frequency for your new station rather than known 1377AM.

I like a presenter who assembles content in a concise, well-ordered way without digging around and stammering, and to be reasonably fluid in delivery. Some humour also serves very well. If the presenter is not at all entertaining, then my least expectation is for him to be able to tell me something I don’t know, or at very least tell me something that makes sense. It doesn’t matter to me whether I agree or disagree, but I expect a paid presenter to be able to express himself at least as well as me. Otherwise I can’t take more than twenty seconds! I don’t think that’s asking too much.

I tuned in this morning as you were exhorting people not to buy the New Idea, which is purported to be paying Roberta Williams for a story.
As your commentary was effectively providing promotion for New Idea, I promptly turned you off!!

We are so sick and tired of these left wing Liberals who have hijacked our country.

Some of us are not content that we are becoming this pseudo Singapore.

The one question nobody asks re the above and which everyone seems to
accept as a given, is that health costs are going to rise each and
every year. The presumed figures are factored into any
discussion/debate about healthcare.

Why? Why should we just accept that they will just continue to rise?

Is it because medical companies just keep manufacturing bigger and
more expensive machines that they then convince hospitals that they
need? Does anyone ever ask if this latest acquisition e.g. new
machine, is going to cure, help, make healthy any more patients?

Is it because the pharmaceutical companies just keep on manufacturing
more and more drugs and then convince doctors that they are better
than all the thousands of drugs that have been manufactured before
and they should therefore prescribe them?

Why doesn’t somebody ask how we can curb the rising health costs? We
have all seen the evidence of continually rising health costs in the
United States and yet they have some of the most unhealthy people in
the western world! Rising health costs there have helped no-one
except Big Medical Business. We do not want to go the same way as the
USA.

Has anybody considered that maybe pushing megabucks into preventative
medicine measures might make for a much more healthy society and
therefore the overall health costs would drop?

Probably not I’m guessing because that would curb the bottom line of
pharmaceutical companies and others. They don’t make money from a
healthy population – the need us to be sick so they can continue to
do what they have always done!

Nothing will change though, unless someone starts asking some very
basic, common sense questions.

1) Steve Vizard needs to ditch his intro/outro music for something more upbeat and fresh.
2) Martin King needs to be pushed to a later timeslot and Ross Greenwood should be brought forward to head up the Drive programme. Greenwood has Hinch-style of urgency to his delivery which would compete better.

It really is being used in vain, they not shock jocks in the true sense. Stan Zemanek did a few things that were shock-jock material.

In the first bunch of e-mails during Martin King’s show, surprise, surprise, an e-mail from ‘Jason of Boronia’, a perennial radio website reader and comment contributor.

This is the big failing of MTR, they have made no effort to push the digital angle for clear, equal, Melb wide reception.

There’s still a few Mornington Peninsula clients on MTR, guess they have to clear commitments somehow (even if they paid for a different audience).

Talk radio is ideal for digital radio take-up, the audience have the highest TSL and use their radios a lot, so have a lot to gain from digital, it’s baffling that MTR doesn’t mention it one bit at all.

Even his Fairfax bosses (a station that they own has him on air), must’ve been laughing at how loyal and silly he was.

Remember kiddies, owning a state registered business name is nothing if you don’t own the trademark and Macquarie already had that wrapped up.

Are there any similar stations to 3MP. We thought it was the best easy listening we had heard.

On the Facebook group 1377 3MP Appreciation Society you will see that alot of 3MP’s fans are in the 30s and under … theres a market for 3MP its not just for oldies as the media paints it … lots of ppl log online to iTunes to listen to stations like this : for eg. Martha’s Vineyard MVYRadio and loads of other online stations from America – since they’ve taken 3MP away from us, we will just have to turn to the net! Melbourne just seems to be plagued with too many shockjock whingeing radio stations

I can’t believe the new owners completely ignored 3 decades of branded goodwill associated with the hushed voiceover of the words 1377 3MP. Theres a psychological process associated with 3 generations of Melbournians turning over the dial to the numbers 1377 to escape the constant yabbering whingeing on the other stations.

Even though you say the music will still be available on digital radio – not every one has this option of listening. Still – we are only listeners and don’t seem to be significant components of this media industry. You’ve lost this household’s support.

I like fluid presenters with a happiness quotient and plenty of positive energy. I can’t take stammering presenters who labour over trivial things like what day or time they read something. It gives me the impression the presenter is striving to prove cleverness and that’s of no value to me.

I don’t hear 2GB now. I feel that the station staff must be demoralised and nervous, and the behind scenes now seems to me to be murky and unpleasant.

Has anyone tried ABC Local Radio, BBC News? Some replays on Radio National are interesting. 2SM is nice to get the feel of people further north from Sydney, and Deb Cameron, mornings ABC Local Radio Sydney, is lovely.

A few times is enough.

This isn’t all that bad for 3MP. AM is on it’s slow way out and digital is the way to go. 3MP (albeit MyMP) will continue on digital radio and I can tell you it sounds great – much better that AM or even Stereo AM ever did. No interference from trams or other electrical devices.

If those listeners loyal to MP continue to listen on digital, then that will help the station stay around for some time to come. So don’t tune out, just tune into 3MP digital. It’s the same station but with a quality signal. We all know that MTR won’t last in Melbourne. It’s only a matter of time.

So in summary, 3MP is not closing it is just changing it’s broadcast from old AM to the new DAB+. So if you’re keen then get a new radio and continue to listen.

Those who forget history are bound to relive it.

Top rating ‘Beautiful Music’ 3AK at this time back in 1986 (and right next to 3MP on the dial) tried to do the exact same thing with a multi-million dollar talkback format change, launched by then former 3AW manager Brian White, and headlining personalities such as John Blackman — it was a total fiasco and destroyed the station.

I only listen to 3MP between 4.30-5.30 am Monday to Friday–any music station with no dj and hardly any commercials, I’ll listen to, only to avoid listening to 3AW’s Keith McGowran treating talkback callers like they’re inmates in an old age sheltered workshop and he the meanspirited bully with his finger forever poised on the ‘dump’ button: I go straight back to 3AW when he’s off and Ross and Burnso are on.

(I heard that ‘easy listening 3MP’ was going to exist only as a digital radio channel, sadly obviously just a rumor.)

But I will miss 3MP as Magic 1278 is unlistenable as a music station with the most grating recorded ads in the history of broadcasting and sonambulist radio hosts (at least at that hour of the morning).

One thing you can never take away from 3MP–the music may be occasionally campy (but usually excellent) and the ratings were variable but their playlists at least had something the others didn’t — life. It deserved to continue in some kind of format – I for one will miss it.

But I do agree with the comments re self-promotiion and being a poliltician through and through. But while I recognise the qualities that you regard as poor ones, I regard them asvery good attributes which are part of the winner instinct because the man knows he is good and he’s ambitious. I think these are very good qualities in a person. Much more spirited to listen to. He knows his content is endless and solid enough. Best wishes!

A spokesperson has assured listeners that the station’s theme track INXS – Original Spin, will still feature prominately.

I hope 2ue scoop David up and subsequently clean up the ratings overnight, Daviid was fair, compitent, and aways showed us opinionated robust debate.

It was bad enough getting rid of David Oldfield the way they did, but then to LIE about it and say he CHOSE to leave is even worse.

I have an email from someone at 2GB called Andreanna Candi of 2GB who emphatically denied that Oldfield was leaving or would be replaced and that was from late last week !

I hope 2UE have the good sense to put him on radio. Their current lineup is so poor that David could really turn things around for them.

Wherever he pops up I will be sure to tune in!

Traffic reports are always out off date and serve to create new bottle necks based on the information they are reporting. The weather guys can say anything they want and still get to keep their jobs.

As you can tell I have no faith in the morass that radio has become. All I want is music. Good muisc. Classic music. Not watered down to appeal to people with no music sense or taste.

So far I am really liking what I am hearing in 95.3. Bold move. Good work.

I was waiting for the phrase ”The Greater”, as in 3UZ to roll off BT’s tongue alas it was not to be.

There was only one radio station that was Football and that was 3KZ!

I don’t really care for Michelle and Smallzy, and if I wanted to listen to a national show, I would listen to Triple J who play better music. In fact, that is probably what I will end up doing.
